Positano, Italy: A 4-Day Itinerary for the Laid-Back Traveler
If you're looking to unwind and soak up the sun in one of the most picturesque spots on the Amalfi Coast, Positano is calling your name. This charming town in Italy beckons for those who want to relax, enjoy stunning views, and get a taste of Amalfi life. Here's a friendly guide to our hassle-free, 4-day itinerary in Positano, filled with a mix of pre-planned activities and spontaneous foodie adventures.
The Best way to get to Positano
First things first: getting to Positano. After weighing our options, we booked a private car from the airport. It was the best decision ever. There was no stress about navigating a new city. Our host connected us with a local driver who not only transported us to our rental but also ensured we made it to the train station smoothly after our stay.
The Best Time to Go to Italy
We arrived in early October, a perfect time when the crowds are thinner and the weather is still wonderfully warm during the day and cool at night. As the sun sets, the city quiets down as the day tourists leave, making it feel like you have the place to yourself.
The Lay of the Land
Check for Steps
Be warned, Positano is hilly. If you despise stairs and lots of walking, this might not be the place for you. My husband and I joked that there should be a fitness warning for visitors, “Must be somewhat fit to visit!” Contact your host or hotel to ask about the number of steps to your accommodation and the main plaza. Our place had quite a few, and it was quite a workout!
Restaurant Reservations
It's always better to make reservations before your trip. However, we were flexible with our itinerary and made same-day reservations at local restaurants. This worked well in October, but during peak season, advance reservations are essential. I've listed the restaurants in the itinerary below.
Pack Smart
When packing for Positano, be strategic about your choices. Bring a sweater or light cardigan for cool evenings, along with comfy sandals and water shoes for the beach. Remember, Positano has many steps to navigate, so it's important to pack light. Avoid bringing too much luggage, as the steep terrain can make it challenging to carry heavy bags. Stick to essentials and versatile clothing to make your trip more comfortable and enjoyable.
Boat Tour
We pre-planned a boat tour to explore the Amalfi Coast and Capri, booking with Grassi Junior Boats, and it was a fantastic experience. The tour offered stunning views and included all the essentials: towels, snorkeling gear, water, and beer. The crew was professional and friendly, ensuring we had a memorable day on the water. We visited hidden coves, swam in crystal-clear waters, and enjoyed the breathtaking coastal scenery. Pre-booking was a great decision, allowing us to relax and fully enjoy the adventure.
Beach Clubs
Beach clubs are a big draw in Positano, offering ideal spots to relax by the sea. While many in Amalfi close in October, La Scogliera remains open and was pleasantly half-filled during our visit. The club provides comfortable loungers, umbrellas, and excellent service, making it a favorite among visitors. For a more relaxed experience with fewer crowds, I recommend visiting outside of peak times.
Laundry
If you accumulate laundry during your trip, be aware that Positano lacks nearby laundromats. Fortunately, our B&B had a washing machine, although it was tricky to use. It's a good idea to ask your host for assistance ahead of time to ensure you understand how it works. This can save you time and frustration, especially if you're unfamiliar with the machine.
Shopping
Shopping in Positano is enjoyable, offering a variety of unique items and local goods. However, retailers typically do not barter, so be prepared to pay the listed prices. Be cautious with some street vendor items, as they may be imported from China rather than locally made. Note that photography isn't allowed in some shops, so it's best to ask before snapping pictures. Many pottery and ceramic stores offer convenient shipping services, allowing you to send your purchases home without the hassle of carrying them. This is especially useful for larger or fragile items.
As promised, here’s my itinerary for all you laid-back travelers.
